Hurricane Michael - 10/10/2018

October 10, 2018 — Hurricane Michael made landfall at 17:30 UTC near Mexico Beach, Florida with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph (255 km/h), making it the strongest hurricane on record to strike the Florida panhandle, and the first Category 5 hurricane to hit the United States since Hurricane Andrew in 1992. The estimated landfall central pressure was 919 mbar (27.14 inHg), the second most intense hurricane in Florida after the 1935 Labor Day hurricane. Michael killed 50 people in Florida, seven of them directly related to the storm's impacts. Statewide economic damage was estimated at $18.4 billion, with catastrophic damage in Mexico Beach and Tyndall Air Force Base. Damage at the base was estimated at $4.7 billion, where wind gusts reached 139 mph (224 km/h), and was estimated as strong as 172 mph (277 km/h).
